Johanna St. John, Founder & Consultant

Johanna St. John lives in Columbus, Ohio and consults with non-profits across the country to raise funds in order to serve their communities at their fullest potential. Her aim is to move toward justice and true community in all areas of her life. Professionally, this means working with organizations doing this important work on the ground, working toward equity and creating vibrant, diverse spaces in their communities.

Johanna began her career in the arts, studying Arts Management and Classical Saxophone. She went on to earn her Masters in Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University, where she discovered a passion for supporting non-profits across disciplines through research-based management and grant writing. During her degree and the years following, she worked with the arts as well as social services organizations, community organizers, youth programs, places of worship, and more.

After graduating, Johanna moved across the country to gain experience on the other side of the funding equation. While living in Montana, she worked in grants administration for the state’s largest Foundation, the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation, reviewing and processing hundreds of grants each year.

Through these experiences, she brings a unique understanding of the role of practitioner, manager, and funder. She is able to offer a deep understanding of the stresses of managing a nonprofit, effective strategies to communicate the significance of an organization's work, and the technical requirements that are involved in a successful application. Most importantly, she is committed to lifelong learning in order to always improve her craft.

Outside of the office, Johanna enjoys gardening, amateur woodworking, yoga, hiking, and all things cozy. On a rainy evening, you might find her baking banana bread and doing a puzzle with friends and a campy movie.
